Opt-Out Guide

How to Opt Out of LexisNexis Risk Solutions

LexisNexis holds data about many adults, but its opt-out is not one button. There are three different requests, and each does something different.

TL;DR

LexisNexis Risk Solutions has one consumer portal with three opt-out options: prescreen offers of credit and insurance, direct marketing, and a Public Safety suppression for restricted public record products. The first two are open to everyone. Public Safety needs proof, such as a protective order or a supervisor’s letter. Expect up to 30 days. Opting out does not remove the underlying public records or your data at other companies.

Before you start opt-outs, see which known data breaches already include your email.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions is a data company that supplies information to insurers, lenders, employers and investigators. Most people never deal with it directly, yet it may hold records about them. Here is what its opt-out portal actually offers.

The three opt-out options

The official LexisNexis consumer portal lists these choices:

  • Firm offers of credit and insurance (prescreen). Removes your information from LexisNexis prescreen lists. It does not remove you from the lists of Equifax, TransUnion or Experian, which need a separate call to 1-888-567-8688. LexisNexis says it does not affect your ability to get credit or insurance.
  • Direct marketing. Stops your data being used in LexisNexis FL Inc. direct marketing products. It does not stop other companies marketing to you.
  • Public Safety. Removes your information from LexisNexis FL Inc. restricted public record products, which are sold only to credentialed commercial and government customers.

Who can use the Public Safety option

LexisNexis says eligible groups include public and elected officials, judges and judicial officers, law enforcement, and people facing personal safety threats. It warns that this option “may cause difficulties with future online identity or insurance verification.”

You must prove your situation. Officials and law enforcement usually need a supervisor’s letter confirming a threat of death or bodily harm, plus proof of their role. At-risk individuals can use a protective order, a police report or a letter from a shelter administrator or health care professional. New Jersey covered persons are not currently required to provide documents, according to the page.

Removal is one half of the job. Check whether your email has leaked as well.

What you will need

  • First and last name, street address, city, ZIP and date of birth.
  • Either a Social Security number or a driver’s licence number and state. The SSN is optional but is the most precise way to match your records.
  • You must be at least 16 to submit. A parent, guardian or authorised person must submit for anyone aged 15 or younger.
  • For the Public Safety option, up to five files under 5 MB each, in Word, PDF, TXT, PNG or JPG format.

If LexisNexis cannot verify the request or match it to records it holds, the page says the request may not be fulfilled. Processing can take up to 30 days.

How to submit

1Open the consumer portal

Use the official LexisNexis opt-out request page and choose who the request is for, usually yourself.

2Pick your options

Choose prescreen, direct marketing, Public Safety, or a combination.

3Enter your details

Fill in the required fields. Provide an SSN or licence number to help matching.

4Upload proof if needed

Only the Public Safety option needs documents.

5Save the confirmation

Take a screenshot and note the date so you can check again after 30 days.

What opting out does not do

A vendor’s guide to the process, published by Incogni, which sells data removal services, says an opt-out does not remove the underlying public records, does not stop other brokers collecting them and does not override regulated background-check products. Treat that as one company’s view, since it competes with free opt-outs. LexisNexis itself says its direct marketing opt-out does not cover other companies.

One of many. LexisNexis is only one data holder. For the wider picture, read how to opt out of data brokers yourself and how to find out which data brokers have your information.
