Reddit Privacy: How Your Username Can Be Linked to You
A Reddit username is not your name, but it can still lead back to you. Profile controls help, and so do a few habits.
In June 2025 Reddit added a Content and Activity setting that lets you hide posts and comments from your profile, all at once or by community. It does not make you anonymous: your username still appears beside posts in each community, and some moderators can still see your public history for 28 days. The bigger risk is what you reveal yourself, so keep personal details out of posts and avoid reusing your username elsewhere.

People use Reddit because it feels anonymous. But a username attached to years of posts can paint a detailed picture, and it only takes one slip to connect it to your real identity.
The profile controls Reddit added
According to TechCrunch’s report of June 3, 2025, Reddit introduced a Content and Activity setting that lets users decide which posts and comments from the communities they take part in appear on their profile. The controls sit in a Curate your profile section, along with a toggle for NSFW content and one to show or hide follower count.
You can hide all public posts and comments, including those made directly on your profile, or show only selected communities and keep the rest hidden. Visibility is set per community, not per post or comment.

What stays visible
The report is clear that this is not true anonymity:
- By default, all posts and comments remain visible.
- Your username still appears beside your posts and comments within each community.
- Some moderators can still view your public post and comment history for 28 days, whatever the settings say.
- You cannot choose individual posts or comments, only whole communities.
How a username gets linked to you
- Reuse. The same handle on Reddit, gaming sites and social media lets anyone search and join the dots. See what people can find from your username.
- Details in posts. A mention of your town, employer, school or a rare hobby, spread over many posts, can narrow things down.
- Photos. Pictures can carry location data or show identifiable places. See photo EXIF data.
- Your email. A sign-up email that contains your name connects the account to you if it leaks. Use an alias. See email aliases.
Practical steps
1Open Curate your profile
Choose what appears on your profile and hide what you do not want strangers to browse.
2Use a separate username
Pick a handle that you do not use elsewhere and that has no link to your name.
3Use an email alias
Do not sign up with an address that includes your real name.
4Review old posts
Look for details such as employer, street or school and edit or delete them.
5Keep different interests apart
Use separate accounts for work topics and personal topics.
A quick self-check
Search for your username on a search engine and on other platforms. See whether the same handle appears on accounts that carry your real name. Read your oldest posts and look for details you would no longer share. If you find something, edit or delete it, and consider moving to a new account for sensitive topics.
Moderators and communities
Moderators can see more than other users in the communities they manage. Be thoughtful about joining communities on sensitive subjects from an account that you use for everything else.
Be careful with screenshots and links
Screenshots of your own posts, shared elsewhere, can carry your username. So can links you post to your own sites or profiles. Before you share something from Reddit, check what it reveals about you. The same goes in reverse: avoid sharing details that would let others work out who a user is.
