Aadhaar Authentication History: How to Check It

Your Aadhaar number can be used to verify your identity at banks, telecom shops and other places. The authentication history shows where, so you can spot misuse.

TL;DR

UIDAI’s Aadhaar Authentication History lets you see where your Aadhaar number was used for authentication. A 2018 report describes the steps: choose the option under Aadhaar Services, enter your 12-digit number and the security code, enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile, pick the authentication type and view the history, which by default covered about the last seven months. If you see use you do not recognise, the report says you can complain to UIDAI by dialling 1947. Check the current website, because steps may have changed.

Many services in India ask for Aadhaar authentication, for example a bank, a telecom retailer or a government scheme. Each time, a record is made. Looking at that record is one of the simplest ways to see whether someone else has used your number.

What the history shows

A Business Today article from January 2018 describes the Aadhaar Authentication History as a way to check where your Aadhaar number was used for authentication. You can choose which type of authentication to look at, for example biometrics, demographics, OTP or combinations.

Steps described in the article

1Open the UIDAI website

Find the Aadhaar Authentication History option under Aadhaar Services on the homepage.

2Enter your details

Type your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the security code, then choose Generate OTP.

3Enter the OTP

It is sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar. Pick the authentication type you want to check.

4View the history

The article says the default view covers the past seven months, and you can select a specific date range.

5Open the detailed records

A second OTP is sent to your phone to open the details for the dates you chose.

Important: this guide may be outdated

The article is from 2018. When we checked the UIDAI homepage, the Aadhaar Online Services heading did not list individual services, so we could not confirm the current labels. UIDAI has changed its site and apps over the years. Start from the official UIDAI website or the official mAadhaar app and look for authentication history under the services menu.

Why your registered mobile matters

The OTP goes to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. If that number is old or not yours, you cannot complete the check and criminals could receive OTPs instead. Keep your registered number current and never share an OTP with anyone who calls or messages you.

If you see use you do not recognise

The article says you can file a complaint with UIDAI by dialling 1947 if the records look wrong. Note the date, the type of authentication and the entity shown, and keep a screenshot. Also tell your bank and mobile provider if the use relates to an account you did not open.

Lock your biometrics too. If you do not use biometric authentication, you can lock it. See how to lock Aadhaar biometrics.

How often to check

There is no fixed schedule, but a quick look every few months is sensible, and straight after you give your Aadhaar to a new service. If you only ever use it for a few things, any entry you cannot explain stands out. Keep a short note of the places where you knowingly used it, such as a bank branch or a SIM purchase, so you can match them against the list.

Reduce the chance of misuse

  • Share only a masked Aadhaar or a virtual ID where it is accepted. Check UIDAI’s current guidance on these options.
  • Do not post photos of your Aadhaar card online.
  • Be careful of phone calls claiming your Aadhaar is blocked or needs updating.
  • Check which SIM cards are registered in your name with Sanchar Saathi.
