Opt-Out Guide

How to Unlist Your Number From Truecaller

Truecaller can show your name to strangers even if you never installed the app. Here is how to take your number out of its search results.

TL;DR

If you use Truecaller, deactivate your account in the app first (Settings, then Privacy Center, then Deactivate). Then go to truecaller.com/unlisting, enter your number with the country code and confirm. Removal is usually reported to take up to 24 hours. Unlisting takes your number out of Truecaller search, but it does not stop your number from being saved in other people’s phones.

Before you start opt-outs, see which known data breaches already include your email.

Truecaller identifies callers by matching phone numbers to names. Much of that data comes from the contact lists of people who use the app. That is why your name can appear in Truecaller even if you have never used it yourself: someone who saved your number shared their contacts.

If you would rather strangers could not look you up by your number, Truecaller offers an unlisting process. The order of steps matters, so follow them as written.

Before you start

Unlisting only works for numbers that are not tied to an active Truecaller account. If you use the app with this number, you need to deactivate the account first. If you have never used Truecaller, skip straight to the unlisting step.

What you lose: once your number is unlisted and the account is gone, you can no longer use Truecaller’s caller ID, spam detection or search with that number.

Step 1: Deactivate your Truecaller account

1On Android

Open Truecaller, tap the menu, open Settings, then Privacy Center, then Deactivate. Confirm when asked.

2On iPhone

Open Truecaller, go to Settings, then Privacy Center, then Deactivate Account. Reports say the iPhone app offers a choice to delete your data or keep it. Choose to delete it.

3Uninstall the app

Deactivating does not remove the app. Uninstall it afterwards if you no longer want it.

Menu names change between app versions, so look for Privacy Center if the exact path differs.

Step 2: Unlist your number

1Open the unlisting page

Go to truecaller.com/unlisting in a browser.

2Enter your number

Type your full number with the country code, for example +91 for India or +1 for the US and Canada.

3Complete the check and confirm

Solve the captcha, choose Unlist, then confirm when asked.

4Wait and check

Technology publications that tested the process report that removal can take up to 24 hours. After a day or two, ask a friend with Truecaller to search your number. If your name still shows on their phone, it may be cached on their device.

Removal is one half of the job. Check whether your email has leaked as well.

What unlisting does and does not do

Unlisting removes your number from Truecaller’s searchable directory, so people cannot type your number into Truecaller and see your name. It does not:

  • Remove your number from other people’s phone contacts.
  • Delete your number from other caller ID apps or people-search sites.
  • Undo past exposure, such as screenshots or other databases that already copied the name.

Some reports note that your name can still appear in some cases when you call someone who uses the app. Treat unlisting as a strong reduction, not a guarantee.

Remove your number from other places too

Truecaller is only one place your number can be looked up. Phone numbers also appear on people-search sites, in old breaches and in public listings. Work through how to search for your phone number online and what to do about an old number that is still public. For messaging apps, see who can see your number on WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal.

Who should consider unlisting

  • People who have had harassment or unwanted contact, where a name lookup makes it easier to find them.
  • Anyone who changed their name and does not want an old name shown.
  • People who simply do not want strangers seeing their name before they answer.

If you rely on Truecaller to screen spam, consider whether a different spam filter from your carrier or phone maker would do the job without listing your own number.

If unlisting does not work

If your number still appears after a few days, check that you deactivated every Truecaller account linked to the number, then repeat the unlisting request. Clearing the Truecaller cache on the phone you use to test can also help, because old results can be stored on that device.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my name on Truecaller if I never used it?

Truecaller builds much of its directory from the contacts of people who use the app. If someone saved your number with your name, it can show up.

Do I need to deactivate my account before unlisting?

Yes, if you use Truecaller with that number. The unlisting request is meant for numbers that are not linked to an active account.

How long does unlisting take?

Guides that tested the process report up to 24 hours. Check again after a day or two.

Will unlisting remove my number from other apps?

No. It only affects Truecaller’s search. Other caller ID apps and people-search sites have their own processes.

Can I use Truecaller again later?

Yes, but registering again with the same number would link it to an account again.

Digital Footprint Scan creates practical privacy guides designed to help people understand and reduce unnecessary online exposure. App menus change, so follow the wording in your app if it differs.
