TL;DR

The Government of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs runs a toll-free cyber fraud helpline, 1930, for immediate reporting of financial fraud, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in for reporting all types of cybercrime. A PIB release of 6 April 2022 says 1930 replaced the earlier number 155260. Reports are followed up by State and Union Territory law enforcement agencies. If money has left your account through a fraud, speed matters. India has an official helpline and a national portal for reporting. This guide explains what the Indian Government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) says about them.

The 1930 helpline

A PIB release dated 6 April 2022 says the Ministry of Home Affairs operationalised a toll-free helpline, 1930, for immediate reporting of financial frauds. It replaced the earlier number, 155260. The helpline works with the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System and also helps people lodge cybercrime incidents on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

A later PIB release, posted on 18 December 2024 with information given by the Minister of State in the Rajya Sabha, describes the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 as toll-free, introduced in 2020, and operating 24x7x365. It says the helpline guides victims, particularly women and children, on reporting online harassment, identity theft and financial fraud.

The reporting portal

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal is at www.cybercrime.gov.in. It was launched as part of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), an attached office of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It lets the public report all types of cybercrime, with a special focus on crimes against women and children. According to the release, reports, their conversion into FIRs and later action are handled by the concerned State or Union Territory law enforcement agencies, as provided by law.

The financial fraud reporting system

The Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System operates under I4C and was launched in 2021 for immediate reporting of financial fraud and to stop fraudsters from moving funds. The December 2024 release states that more than Rs. 3431 crore has been saved across more than 9.94 lakh complaints. These are Government figures given to Parliament, and the release does not explain how they were calculated.

What to do straight away

The official pages stress immediate reporting. A practical order of action:

  1. Call 1930 as soon as you realise money has been taken, and give the details you have.
  2. Report on cybercrime.gov.in and note the acknowledgement or complaint number you receive.
  3. Tell your bank right away so it can act on the transaction.
  4. Keep records. Save screenshots, messages, call logs, transaction references, dates, amounts and the account or number the money went to. This list is our suggestion, not an official checklist.
  5. Do not pay anyone who offers to recover your money for a fee.

Protect your identity too

A fraudster who has your details may misuse them. Check what is linked to your name with Sanchar Saathi, review your Aadhaar authentication history and consider locking your Aadhaar biometrics.

Cutting down on scam calls

Many frauds begin with a call or message. See how to use TRAI DND and why scam calls show real numbers.

A note on how to use this guide

Contact details and procedures can change. Always use the official PIB or Government websites to confirm numbers before you call. Do not follow links sent to you by strangers claiming to be from a helpline.

Why reporting helps beyond you

Reports let agencies spot patterns and block accounts or numbers used by fraud rings. The Government figures in the December 2024 release also mention that more than 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1,32,000 IMEIs reported by police had been blocked up to 15 November 2024.

Key point. Report financial fraud on 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in immediately, tell your bank, and keep every record.
