Spotify Private Session and Privacy Settings
Private Session lets you listen without friends seeing it. It is short-lived, so it works best as a quick switch rather than a lasting privacy setting.
Spotify Private Session stops your listening appearing in Friends Activity, stops your recently played artists updating on your profile and stops the session shaping your recommendations or Wrapped. It is an account-level setting and turns off automatically after 6 hours or when you restart the app. On mobile, find it under Settings and privacy, then Privacy and social. On desktop, click your profile picture and choose Private session.

What you listen to can say a lot about you: your mood, your habits and sometimes your life. Spotify gives you a quick way to listen without leaving a trail for your friends. Here is what it does and where it stops.
What Private Session does
According to Spotify’s support page, while a private session is on:
- Your listening does not appear in Friends Activity.
- Your recently played artists do not update on your profile.
- The session does not shape your recommendations.
- Listening during the session does not appear in your Wrapped.
Spotify describes it as an account-level setting. It applies across all your devices, including TVs and speakers.
How long it lasts
Spotify says Private Session turns off automatically after 6 hours or when you restart the app. If you want privacy for a longer period, you need to turn it on again.
How to turn it on
1On mobile or tablet
Tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy, then Privacy and social. Under Listening activity, switch Private Session on.
2On desktop

What Private Session does not cover
Private Session is about your listening activity. Spotify handles other items in separate settings, which its support pages describe in their own articles. These include which playlists you publish to your profile, who can access a playlist, and other privacy and social controls. The support page for Private Session does not describe those settings, so review them yourself in Settings and privacy, under Privacy and social.
A short privacy check for Spotify
- Look at your public profile as a stranger would see it, and check your public playlists.
- Rename or hide playlists whose titles reveal personal details, such as a name, school, workplace or a person you are in a relationship with.
- Review who you follow and who follows you.
- Use a username and profile picture that do not link back to your other accounts. See username search for why this matters.
Why listening history says more than you think
Playlist names, listening times and the artists you follow can show your mood, your daily routine and who you are close to. A playlist named after a person or a place can be enough to identify a relationship or a home town. That is why it is worth looking at your profile from the outside.
Using Private Session sensibly
- Start it before you listen to something you want to keep to yourself, because it does not hide what you played earlier.
- Remember it ends after six hours or when you restart the app, so check it if you listen for a long time.
- Turn it on when you share a speaker, TV or account with other people.
Separate accounts for separate lives
If you want a lasting separation between work, school and personal listening, a separate account is more reliable than a short-lived session. Use a different username and profile picture for each one.
Wider habits
Music apps are part of your digital footprint like any other service. See active and passive digital footprint examples, and for another app that shows more than people expect, read Venmo privacy.
