Venmo Privacy: How to Hide Your Transactions

A payment note can say who you paid and why. Venmo's default makes that visible to anyone unless you change it.

Updated October 11, 2026
TL;DR

According to Venmo's help pages, payments can be Public, Friends or Private. The help pages do not state a default, and it has been changing for new accounts, so check yours. Amounts are hidden in the feed. Where two people use different settings, the more restrictive one applies. Change your default under Me > gear > Privacy, and use the option to make past payments more private. Venmo debit and credit card purchases and approved merchants are Private by default.

Peer-to-peer payment apps feel private because they sit on your phone. Venmo is different. It has a social feed, and a payment can be seen by other people depending on the setting you chose.

What Venmo shows by default

Venmo's help pages describe three audiences for a payment: Public, Friends and Private. The help pages do not state the default, and it has been changing for new accounts, so check your own setting. Amounts are hidden in the feed, although everyone in the payment can see them, and the people involved, the note and the date may be visible to whoever the setting allows.

A payment note can be revealing even without an amount. "Rent for the new apartment", "dinner with Sam" or a note about a medical visit tells a reader where you are and who you spend time with. Combined with a profile photo and full name, it becomes a map of your life.

Both people matter. Venmo says that when two people use different settings for a payment, the more restrictive setting applies. A friend with a Private default can make a payment between you more private than your own default would.

What others could learn

Public payments can reveal:

  • Who you pay and who pays you
  • How often and when
  • The notes and emojis you attach
  • A friend list that connects you to other accounts

A feed with many public payments gives a stranger more to work with than one with a few, but the fix is quick either way.

How to make your default private

Venmo's help center says you can change your default setting from the Me tab. Open the gear icon, go to Privacy, and choose what future payments should default to. Choose Private if you want payments visible only to you and the other person, or Friends if you want your friends to see them.

1Open the Privacy settings

In the app, go to the Me tab, tap the gear, then Privacy.

2Set your default

Pick Friends or Private for future payments. Remember that you can also change an individual payment before you send it.

3Handle past payments

Venmo's help page on hiding past payments says past payments can only be made more private, not more public. Privacy settings also include an option to hide your past transactions in bulk. We could not confirm the exact label, so read the options on your screen.

4Review your friends list

Remove people you do not know. A Friends setting is only as private as the friends you have.

5Check your profile details

Review your display name, username and photo. Use only what you are comfortable having next to your payments.

Cards and merchants

Venmo says purchases made with a Venmo debit or credit card, and payments to approved merchants, are Private by default. Teen accounts are also private by default. Check the help pages if you rely on these defaults, since the rules for specific products can change.

"Find Me" and discoverability

Venmo also has settings about how others find you, such as by phone number or contacts. If you do not want your account to be discoverable from your number, look for options labeled Find Me in the privacy menu. Our guide on how scammers get your phone number explains why a discoverable number matters.

Venmo scams

A visible feed gives scammers material for "accidental payment" requests and fake giveaways. If you receive an unexpected payment followed by a request to send it back, treat it as a possible scam and contact Venmo through its official help channels instead of the message.
