How to Make TikTok Private: What Strangers Can Still See

A private TikTok account hides your videos from strangers, but your name, username and photo stay visible. Here is what changes and what does not.

Updated October 19, 2026
TL;DR

To make TikTok private, open your profile, tap the menu, go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy, and turn on Private account. TikTok says you then choose who can watch your videos, bio and likes and who can see your followers, and you approve each new follower. Your name, username and profile photo stay visible to anyone, and people can still search for your account.

Your email is the key to most of your accounts. Has it already leaked?

TikTok accounts are public unless you change that. A private account is the simplest step to stop strangers watching your videos, but it does not make you invisible.

How to switch to a private account

The steps below follow TikTok’s help page. Labels can change with app updates.

1Open your profile

Tap Profile at the bottom of the app.

2Tap the menu

It is the three-line button at the top.

3Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy

Select Privacy from the list.

4Turn on Private account

Switch the setting on.

What a private account does

  • You choose who can watch your videos, LIVE videos, bio and likes.
  • You choose who can see your followers and following lists.
  • You approve each person who wants to follow you.
  • Others cannot Duet, Stitch, make stickers from, or download your posts, or add them to their Stories.

What stays visible to everyone

TikTok says your name, username and profile photo remain visible to anyone, on or off TikTok, and people can still search for your account. So a private account does not hide that you use TikTok.

Gaps the help page does not settle

TikTok’s page does not say how switching to private affects people who already follow you. If you have followers you do not know, review your list and remove anyone you do not recognise. It also separates the question of whether your account is suggested to other people, which is its own setting. Check Settings and privacy for the suggestion options.

Limiting single videos

TikTok also notes you can limit individual posts through the video settings. The options depend on your app version, so check them when you post. This is the right tool when you want one video seen by fewer people without changing your whole account.

Keep your profile safe even when private

  • Use a profile photo that does not show your school, work or street.
  • Keep your bio free of full name, city, school and phone number.
  • Use a username that is different from your other accounts. See what people can find from your username.
  • Turn off location in the app and remove location data from files before posting. See photo EXIF data.
For parents. Sit down with a child and go through these settings together. See children and teens’ digital footprint: a parent’s guide.

A quick checklist after going private

  • Review your follower list and remove people you do not know.
  • Check who can comment on your videos and message you. The options differ by app version, so look through Settings and privacy.
  • Remove or hide old videos that show your school, workplace or street.
  • Check any links in your bio and any accounts you have connected to TikTok.
  • Look at your profile as a stranger would, using a logged-out browser if you can.

A private account is not a private life

Anyone you approve as a follower can see your videos, and approved followers can take screenshots or screen recordings. Only approve people you trust, and assume anything you post could be shared further by someone you know.

Talk to children about what private means

Children often think private means invisible. Explain that approved followers can still share what they see, and that names, usernames and photos remain visible. Check the settings together every few months.
